Pacific Beacon Residential Towers, 32nd Street Naval Base, San Diego, CA
We worked closely with Rutledge-Haro Design and Clark Realty Capital on the Pacific Beacon project, which, at the time, was the second largest construction job in California. Initially, we were brought in to design and fabricate two rolling roof-top firepits, six decorative hanging metal wall sculptures, and a good amount of custom metal and wood furniture for the main lobby. As the job progressed, I received the honour of designing and fabricating the three soldier recognition memorials for the fallen US Navy SEALs, after whom the three towers were named: Sonar Technician 2nd Class Matthew Gene “Axe” Axelson, Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Danny P. Dietz, and Interior Communications Electrician First Class Thomas Eugene Retzer.
“Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10″, written by Marcus Luttrell, commemorates fallen heroes Dietz and Axelson in what was to become a New York Times best selling non-fiction book in 2007, and soon to be released (December 25, 2013) major motion picture by filmmaker Peter Berg. The film will star Mark Wahlberg as Marcus Luttrell, Ben Foster as Matt Axelson, Emile Hirsch as Danny P. Dietz, and Taylor Kitsch as Michael Murphy.
